One of the most consistently interpreted passages in Revelation, the correct understanding of the 42 months was held for centuries prior to its fulfilment. It verifies conclusively the principle of interpreting a day for a year in Revelation.

It is remarkable to note that the correct understanding of this passage was determined by at least 1571, some 300 years before it was fulfilled, and that expositors held to it over three centuries of papal dominance, faithfully believing it would come to pass, despite the current events of their day which suggested otherwise.

The earliest expositors writing concerning the number of the beast, understood it to refer to the name of the ‘fourth empire upon earth’ (Daniel 7:23), since the beast of the sea in Revelation 13 is clearly the same as the fourth beast of Daniel 7.

If therefore this beast in Revelation 13 is the fourth beast of Daniel 7, they reasoned, then the name must have reference not merely to a single man, but to the name of the ‘fourth empire upon earth’.

Since the ‘fourth empire upon earth’ was the Roman empire, the name ‘Lateinos’ (the Greek form of the Latin word ‘Latinos’, by which the Romans designated themselves), must be the name of the beast. The fact that the Greek word ‘lateinos’ contains the number ‘666’ confirms the interpretation.
