They actually aren't failed prophecies. They just haven't happened yet. These refer to a coming nuclear confrontation. Hence "utter desolations" and uninhabitable forty years. Jesus said that immediately after the tribulation the sun would be darkened, and so on. From all the dirt kicked up.
